Dear Christian: What is Righteousness?

What is righteousness?
Merriam Webster defines righteousness as being "free from guilt or sin." But what is righteousness to God, whom is righteous and doesn't need us?
The bible says that "God made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him." ( 2 Corinthians 5:21, NIV)
Let's be clear, Jesus did not become a sinner, but sin- a curse rather, where the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23). Put simply, Jesus became us, our sin,  and we became Him, his righteousness. We traded and Jesus died because of that wage. Now, Jesus died for the sole purpose of atonement,  to reconcile God and man.
But why do we have to be righteous, why is righteousness important?  Isaiah 32:17 states it best,  "And the work of righteousness shall be peace,  and the effect of righteousness shall be quietness and assurance forever."
In other words, we will not eat the fruit of sin- like Eve, but the fruit of righteousness. And the effects of eating this fruit will be quietness and assurance in God. Halelujah!
